Estadio Azteca opened in 1966 and immediately became the centrepiece of Mexican football. Constructed to host the 1970 FIFA World Cup, its debut tournament saw Brazil lift the Jules Rimet Trophy for the third time after defeating Italy 4–1 in the final. Brazil’s performance that summer — with Pelé, Jairzinho, and Gérson — is widely considered the greatest team display in World Cup history, and it happened here.

The stadium hosted the World Cup again in 1986 after Colombia withdrew from hosting duties. That tournament belonged to Diego Maradona, who produced two of the most discussed moments in football history within five minutes of the same quarterfinal match against England. First, the deliberate handball that he later described as scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.” Then, eleven seconds and eleven touches later, the goal later voted the greatest in World Cup history. Getting to Estadio Azteca

Estadio Azteca is located in the Tlalpan borough of southern Mexico City, approximately 14 km from the city centre. It is one of the most accessible major stadiums in Latin America by public transport, which is significant given that Mexico City traffic is consistently heavy — particularly during major events.

The metro is overwhelmingly the recommended option. Line 2 of the Mexico City Metro terminates at Tasqueña station, from where the Tren Ligero light rail line runs directly to Estadio Azteca station — a journey of under 10 minutes. Driving is possible but parking is extremely limited and prices will be significantly elevated for World Cup matches. For the Opening Match on June 11, plan to arrive well ahead of kick-off. FIFA recommends a minimum of two hours before major fixtures; for the opening ceremony, three hours is advisable.

• Metro & Tren Ligero: Line 2 to Tasqueña, then Tren Ligero to Estadio Azteca station. Fast, cheap, and avoids all traffic.
• Driving: Not recommended. Mexico City traffic is severe and World Cup match days will make it significantly worse. Parking is very limited.
